What is PFP
Passive Fire Protection
In a fire, steel structures rapidly lose their mechanical strength - above 550°C, steel can no longer carry the load it supported cold. Structural collapse can occur within minutes, putting lives, equipment and asset integrity at risk. Sherwin-Williams FIRETEX® intumescent coatings are formulated to expand on contact with heat, forming an insulating char layer that slows the heating of the steel - providing 30 minutes to 4 hours of structural protection, depending on the specified system. That time is what allows people to evacuate safely and firefighters to act before collapse. PFP is not optional in infrastructure, energy and industrial projects - it is required by international fire safety standards and insurer requirements.

The performance of a PFP system depends not only on the product - it depends critically on the quality of the application. Sherwin-Williams certifies FIRETEX® applicators with specific training in: surface preparation, wet and dry film thickness control, compatible primer and topcoat systems, and conformity inspection.
