Coatings with proven chemical resistance for environments where acids, bases and solvents coexist with strict regulatory requirements.

Environments that destroy the wrong coatings

Chemical and pharmaceutical plants combine continuous exposure to mineral and organic acids, concentrated bases, solvents and oxidizing agents with regulatory requirements that define which materials may contact the product. A coating without adequate chemical resistance does not just fail prematurely - it can contaminate the process, cause non-conformance with ANVISA or FDA and compromise asset integrity. Sherwin-Williams P&M specifies systems with the right combination of chemical barrier, substrate adhesion and regulatory compliance.

Applications by environment type

Tanks and reactors - strong acids

Epo-Phen® phenolic or novolac epoxy for immersion in HCl, H₂SO₄, HNO₃ and acid blends - with minimum DFT specified per acid type and concentration.

Tanks and reactors - bases and alkalis

High-solids epoxy systems with alkaline resistance - for NaOH, Ca(OH)₂ and hot CIP cleaning solutions.

Chemical process room floors

Resuflor™ or Poly-Crete® depending on product type and service temperature. Expansion joints and drains specified with compatible material.

Pharmaceutical environments - cleanrooms

Smooth, semi-gloss epoxy finish with no texture - easy cleaning and disinfection with isopropyl alcohol, quaternaries and vaporized H₂O₂.

Facades and external structures

Macropoxy® + Sher-Loxane® to protect structures in environments with acid mist, solvent emissions and C3/C4 weather exposure.

Containment dikes and bunds

Systems resistant to hazardous chemical spills - assessed according to the product's chemical composition and containment volume.

Applicable standards

ISO 12944 C3–C5

Corrosivity categories for industrial and chemical environments - the basis for specifying structural protection systems.

ASTM C579

Chemical resistance of resin coatings - the standard for floors in acid-exposure environments.

FDA / ANVISA

Compliance for surfaces in contact with active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients - varies by product type.

ATEX / NR-10

Electrical safety requirements for explosion-risk environments - dissipative floors and spark-free systems.
